Veterinary Sciences

Veterinary Science is a medical profession dealing with care and control of diseases in animals. They prevent spread of animal diseases and give advice on care of pets and farm animals. Their work also includes breeding and scientific handling of livestock. With more and more people keeping pets, the demand for veterinary doctors has risen, especially in the urban areas. In rural areas too, with growing education and awareness, the importance of a veterinary specialist is now better appreciated.

Educational Qualification:

To practice as a veterinary specialist one has to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science (B.VSc.), which is a four and a half years to five years course, including the period of internship. Admission to the B.VSc. course is through entrance exam conducted by the concerned university, and is open to candidates who have passed XIIth with physics, chemistry and biology. Generally after doing B.VSc candidates opt for M.VSc. which is a two year course and the candidate has the option to specialize in areas like medicine, pathology, surgery and so on.
