Job Description:
Elementary School Teachers are commonly divided into
two broad categories namely nursery teachers and primary teachers. Nursery teachers have a very important role
to play in the overall growth of a child. They handle children in the age group
of 3-7 years and are responsible for their social, emotional and intellectual
growth. They introduce the concept of numbers among the tiny tots and develop
their language skills by way of story telling, singing rhymes etc. They train
them to use their hands and coordinate limb movement through various craft
activities like clay modeling, paper cutting and sticking, drawing, handling
educational toys etc.
Primary teachers instruct one or more groups of students
between ages 7-12 in classes 1-6. They help children in further developing
their language skills and to handle numbers and explore mathematical ideas. At
the primary level subjects like science, history and geography are also
introduced. Junior level teachers normally teach all subjects in a class that
they are assigned.
In addition to classroom activities teachers also have to
prepare and plan their lessons, evaluate the children, prepare report cards,
meet parents, contribute in co-curricular activities of the school and attend
faculty meetings/training programs as well.
Educational Qualification:
The desirable qualification for nursery teachers is
Graduation/Post-graduation in Child Development or Early Childhood Education
preferably with B.Ed. or Graduate degree in any discipline with nursery
training certificate/ diploma/degree.
For primary teachers the desirable qualification is a good
graduate/post-graduate degree with degree diploma in teaching/education.
